OUR EDITORIAL STANDARDS

Editorial Policy

How ARVREN researches historical images, checks claims, handles image rights and corrects errors.

Our purpose

ARVREN publishes visual-history stories and research guides about photographs, places, people, technology and events. Our aim is to make historical images more understandable by connecting them to chronology, provenance and documented context. Images are a starting point for reporting, not a substitute for it.

Research and fact-checking

We aim to consult reliable sources, prioritising item-level archive records, museums, libraries, government collections, scholarly publications and contemporary documents where relevant. Important dates, names, locations and attributions should be checked against more than one source when practical. We distinguish documented facts from interpretation and avoid presenting uncertain identifications as settled facts.

Historical records can disagree. When a date or attribution is debated, we explain the uncertainty where it materially affects the story. We do not claim that every article has undergone external peer review.

Image selection and rights

We prefer images whose provenance and reuse terms can be documented. Each image should have descriptive alternative text and, where possible, a caption linking to the source record. Rights statements vary by item and jurisdiction; we check the specific record rather than assuming that all images in an archive have the same terms.

If you believe an image is misattributed or used contrary to its stated terms, contact [email protected] with the page URL and supporting information. We will review the claim and may correct the credit, replace the image or remove it while the issue is assessed.

Corrections and updates

We welcome specific, documented corrections. Please email [email protected] with the article URL, the passage in question and a reliable source supporting the correction. Substantive corrections should improve the article rather than silently obscure a material error. We may update articles as new evidence or better source records become available.

Independence and transparency

ARVREN is an independent publication. We aim to make article content useful to readers rather than write solely to attract search traffic or display advertising. If sponsorships or other commercial relationships are introduced, they should be clearly disclosed and kept distinguishable from editorial material.

ARVREN research note

Our guides are intended as a starting point for careful visual research. When a claim depends on a particular photograph, archive description or licensing statement, consult the original record and preserve its context.
