OUR EDITORIAL METHOD

Read the image.
Question the frame.

ARVREN is a visual history publication about the stories behind historical photographs. We treat each image as evidence with a history of its own—not as a complete or unquestionable record of the past.

Our promise

We aim to show where a photograph comes from, explain the historical context, distinguish evidence from interpretation, and be open about what remains uncertain.

1. Start with provenance

We look for the holding institution, catalogue record, photographer where known, date, original caption and the chain through which the image has been published. A repost or search result is not a substitute for an archive record.

2. Read visual clues carefully

Buildings, clothing, vehicles, tools, signs, shadows and composition can help frame research questions. These clues rarely prove a date or identity by themselves, so we compare them with documentary sources and avoid presenting guesses as facts.

3. Put the frame back into history

Our stories explain what happened before and after the photographed moment, why the image mattered, and how it was later circulated or remembered. Where sources disagree, we aim to say so rather than hide the disagreement.

4. Separate fact from interpretation

Descriptions of what is visible should be distinguishable from explanations of what it might mean. A photograph can document a scene, but it cannot automatically establish every person’s identity, motive, or the full circumstances outside the frame.

5. Make image credits and rights traceable

Where possible, we link directly to the source record and identify the stated rights basis. Public-domain status may vary by country; “no known copyright restrictions” is not the same as a universal commercial-use licence. We review credits and rights notes as part of editorial maintenance.

6. Correct and improve

Historical research evolves. If you spot a factual error, missing credit, broken source link or rights concern, please contact us with the page URL and supporting evidence. We will review it and update the page when warranted.

Important limitation

This method describes our editorial aims; it is not a guarantee that every interpretation is final or that every image is cleared for every use in every jurisdiction. Please consult the individual source record for the current rights information.
